Lake Wakatipu House, Queenstown

This project is a holiday home designed to sit on a magnificent north facing lakeside property in Queenstown. With a large rock outcrop covering most of the section, the approach was to drop the house as close to the ground as possible and ‘float’ over this natural feature. The Japanese concept of the engawa is incorporated to provide a secondary living space. This space also serves as an acoustic barrier against the ever present aeroplane noise as the site is within the flightpath to the nearby Queenstown airport.
